THE TREE OF VEINS I,  1941

Watercolour. 10 x 7in. (25.7 x 18cm.)

Inscribed on the reverse: ‘Diagrams of Love’ and the title.

Provenance

National Trust bequest.

Tate Gallery Archive: TGA 929/4/11/8.

There are two works with this title. They have some differences but are essentially similar. Both are carefully worked and finished, suggesting that both are completed works rather than study and final work.

A tree with branches, each of which terminate with a heart. Yellow lines of force connect the heart at the top of the trunk with the hearts at the ends of the branches. The tree grows within an arc that suggests an egg; the roots lie beyond the egg form. The hearts are red and the roots blue.
