The Vesica Pisces symbol is now used almost exclusively to denote membership of the Christian religion.  In origin, however, the shape, which is derived from the intersection of two circles, was used in association with the Goddess Venus and represents the female genitalia.  Early depictions of Christ show him as an infant within the vesica, which represents the womb.

Colquhoun used the vesica symbol as the basis for her design for a monument to commemorate the Silver Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II.
