Holed stones are found regularly in megalithic monuments. They are not confined to Europe, occurring also in India, for example. Symbolically they are associated with the Sun and rebirth. They were often used by local people in rituals and ceremonies concerning fertility, betrothal and health. They are associated with the feminine cosmic principle, corresponding with the vital energies of the earth and with the power of the sun. For another example of a holed stone, see The Sunset Birth (c.1942).
