The nymph Arethusa was one of the Nereids.  The  nereids were the daughters of Nereus, who lived in the depths of the Mediterranean Sea. Arethusa was a companion of the goddess Artemis.  Whilst she was bathing in a river, the river-god Alpheus attempted to seduce her.  She fled to Sicily where she was changed into a fountain by Artemis. Alpheus followed her, transformed himself into a river and united his waters with her.
