A competition for a painted wall panel was conducted by the Royal Society of Arts for the National Cash Register Company, who wished to incorporate a mural painting in the office block of their new factory in Dundee.  The subject set for the panel was The Scottish Scene and the artists were free to embody any theme or themes.  From the designs submitted, fifty were selected for exhibition in London and to tour Scotland.  They were subsequently to be shown in different factories.  The artist commissioned to carry out the final mural was Gertrude Scales.
